ELF HILL HOUSE HAMMOND S1 SENIOR SERIES: SHENINGTON

SHENINGTON - SENIOR S1 ROUND 1: 25.4.99

Although only sixteen years of age, Michael Spencer left Shenington with a three point lead in the British Kart Championships after his first Super One in Formula A. Of course he had already won the Formula A Winter Series after moving up from JICA into ICA for 1998. Twice British vice-champion Dean Panrucker headed qualifying from James Wright, Spencer, Matthew Griffin and Simon Short with newcomer Michael Conway in sixth. Griffin won the first heat but DNF'd his second, Wright took the second and Spencer the third but Wright's third place in the second heat sealed pole for the first final. Spencer soon headed the field, but came under heavy pressure from Panrucker, the lead constantly swapping around with Stevie Morris always challenging and getting between the two on the run to the flag, Spencer winning. The second final looked to be a rerun, only with James Wright staying in the lead battle and leaving Philip Charles well behind. Tight, close and furious the advantage swayed between Panrucker and Spencer with Morris having the occasional turn up front. Spencer looked to have the later advantage, but Panrucker pushed his kart back on terms, and went for a miniscule gap on the last corner. Spencer took up the story: "I was as tight as possible to get round the corner but Dean still got through the gap, albeit on two wheels. I thought his kart was going to tip over." So the vice-champion's third and first leaves him second in the championships. Polesitter Jay Howard was in a league of his own in Intercontinental A, a clear seven seconds ahead of Fraser Sheader, coming from grid thirteen, and Jon Daltrey. Tom Ferrier, still time-sharing cars and karts, had been second and just recovered fourth from David Stoddart. Graham Hill surprised everyone but himself with a confident win in Formula TKM, defeating Lee Piercey, Adrian Crockett and Chris Lamare after a huge fight. Never lower than second, and mostly in the lead, Gareth Hession took the Formula 100C, defeating first Andrew Tinsley, who dropped to fourth, and runner-up Simon Harraway with Simon (Kato) Adams taking third.
