ELF HILL HOUSE HAMMOND S1 SENIOR SERIES: LARKHALL
SENIOR S1 AT LARKHALL: 11.7.99
Dean Hawkey and Simon Short shared the honours at the Scottish round of the Elf Hill House Hammond S1 series for the British Kart Championships. Michael Spencer topped a close fought qualifying, with a 36.99 second lap. Dean Hawkey, Matthew Griffin and James Wright were only separated by five hundredths of a second with Spencer, Hawkey and Wright taking a heat win apiece in this Formula A category. Wright earned pole for the first final, sharing the front row with Griffin but the latter crashed badly, bringing out the red flags. At the restart Dean Hawkey took the win, from James Wright, Dean Panrucker and Mike Spencer. Erstwhile points leader Stevie Morris had an off to finish only twentieth. In the second final, Panrucker fought through to lead, and was looking comfortable for a win, but a flapping chain guard brought out the mechanical flag, giving a severe blow to his championship hopes. Spencer inherited the lead, taking a tight defensive line into the last corner, the dirty track then causing him to run wide letting a grateful Simon Short through to win with Wright, Martin Brackenbury and a rejuvenated Chris Cooke following closely. Cooke had changed karts from his usual Haase to a Tecno. In Intercontinental A, Fraser Sheader won on the road but suffered a five place penalty for a coming together with Jay Howard. The latter driver later had another clash with Tom Ferrier, putting them both to the back. Jody Whitmore inherited the win, from initial leader David Griffiths, Dean Haddon and Mike Mills. Stuart Baker enjoyed a dominant lights to flag victory in Formula 100C, Oliver Poyser and James Mills unable to challenge. Championship contender Gareth Hession kept his hopes alive albeit dropping to seventh whilst points leader Andrew Tinsley failed to finish the B final. Chris Nash had a pole to flag win in Formula TKM, Jonathan Davies initially second but passed by Chris Lamare who went on to track the leader, but with insufficient pace to pass.
News Minis
Chris Cooke dropped his Modus Haase chassis at the Larkhall Super One round in favour of a Tecno, and was immediately back on the pace.
Matthew Griffin had a bad crash at Larkhall, dislocating a shoulder, breaking two ribs and a vertebrae. He had earlier qualified third in the time trials and came from the front row of the grid for the first final.
