ELF HILL HOUSE HAMMOND S1 JUNIOR SERIES: PF INTERNATIONAL

PF/TRENT VALLEY - JUNIOR S1 ROUND 1: 18.4.98

After two qualifying rounds for the more popular classes like Cadet and Junior TKM, the Elf Hill House Hammond Super One circus started in earnest at the multi-million PF International track near Newark, organised by the Trent Valley team. JICA, the Junior British Championship class was nearly fully subscribed as well, each class can take a maximum of forty eight drivers in the main series. JICA follows the international system with timed qualifying to set the grids for the heats, two for each driver, but points are only scored in the two finals. The other classes follow the familiar front, middle and back on the three heats, which count towards points as well as the final.

After some awesome racing, top seed Oliver Jarvis stood atop the podium. Last year's champion Michael Conway is old enough to go up to Formula A, as is Jarvis in mainland Europe. Jarvis also headed qualifying after a lucky break saw him out near the end on a rapidly drying track. Ben Hanley was a tenth behind, followed in quick succession by Steve Thompson, Ed Tilley, Alex Lloyd and Russell Parkes. Hanley went on to win both his heats, whilst Jarvis could only manage fourth and fifth. His rival Chris Rogers was badly hindered by having to change an oiled up plug. Come the first final, Tilley, Hanley and John Byrne all took turns to lead, until Byrne came off trying to resist a pass for the win, leaving Hanley the honours from Tilley, Jarvis and Andrew Wilson. Rogers spun to the back. Frantic racing saw Hanley's lead usurped first by Wilson, then the O'Neill Tonykart driver took over, throwing both hands in the air as he crossed the line for the second final. Jarvis admitted later: "We struggled for power in the first, but the team sorted it for the second final, it's been a brilliant day." Oliver Oakes was the star in Cadet, winning the B Final then climbing all the way to third in a thrilling A final. But it was Martin Plowman's day, the Brummie's last lap move earning him the chequer from Philip English. Richard Evans enjoyed his first Super One win in Junior TKM, reeling in polesitter Ben Clucas, who dropped to fourth, and extending his lead by three seconds over Jonathan Robertson and Steve Barden. Poleman James Rowden was forced into retirement with a broken exhaust soon after losing the lead to Ian Johnstone, well clear of Liam Walters who had a similar advantage over Daniel Deveraux and Thomas Wedgwood.

News
Twice British Vice-champion Dean Panrucker has entered the European Formula Super A championships with the Nick Jest Racing team. He will use a CRG chassis with engines from JAG.

Three drivers were fined during the Junior Super One for late or non-attendance at drivers briefing. Cadet James McCarthy and JICA pilotes Blaine Segust and Nick Kjaer each went home £25 light on pocket money.
