ELF HILL HOUSE HAMMOND S1 JUNIOR SERIES: FULBECK

JUNIOR S1 PENULTIMATE ROUND 5 (6): 26.9.99

Ben Hanley and Alex Lloyd shared the spoils in the Junior British Kart Championship, but Oliver Jarvis hung onto his championship lead. Paul di Resta starred in damp qualifying, with Iain Inglis, Chris Rogers, Michael Simpson, Russell Love and Philip Keen following. Everyone swapped to their wet set up karts when the heavens opened again just before the first heat. Paul di Resta romped away from Russell Love and James Kirkpatrick. After Love dropped from first to nearly last in the second heat, Rogers dominated, Hanley and Gonzalez scrapping over second. Simpson took the third from Hanley and Jarvis. Poleman di Resta made a poor start for the first final, and soon had to pit to replace his nosecone Love was off the track too. Ben Hanley opened the gap over the scrapping Jarvis and Rogers, with Lloyd coming up to pass both, Iain Inglis also passing Jarvis in a fantastically exciting last couple of laps. Chris Rogers started best in the second final, leading Hanley, Lloyd and Jarvis until Hanley overshot the chicane and had to u-turn to avoid a lap penalty. Lloyd snatched the lead and as the battle intensified behind by the championship protagonists of Rogers and Jarvis he eased away. Ed Tilley was mixing it with them too and took second as Rogers faded slightly in fourth. Lloyd said of his win: "We didn't have good heats, the kart was not on the pace, but it came good for the final." Jarvis added: "The championship will come down to the final round, just like last year. I'll just sit tight and keep Chris in sight." Once polesitter Dominik Jackson relinquished the lead of Junior TKM to Richard Evans, Ben Clucas knew all he had to do to clinch the championship was sit behind in second, which he duly did to complete a clean sweep of all the major titles. Oliver Oakes won Cadets from grid nine, from John Boyd and Martin Plowman who will settle the championship at Buckmore. Iain Johnstone easily won Yamaha from James Bean and Chris Wright, but a mistake on his scrutineering card put it in doubt. A fine was imposed but although other drivers prepared to protest the decision no change was made.
