Clay Pigeon Juniors Round 2 28/5/00

(includes TV Coverage details)

What a drive!  From last on the repechage grid to a win in the final, read on… The day was punctuated by very heavy rain-showers, the TKM Inters being worst affected. The changing conditions brought out some great racing and surprise results.

TV transmission dates continue with the Seniors on June 6 at 19.30 on Sky 2, June 7 10.00 & 15.30 on Sky 3, and 12.00 on Sky 2. Remember the coverage is being split into various programmes so there will often be three or even more sections of coverage from one meeting.

Hill House Hammond MSA British Junior Kart Champs

Timed qualifying: di Resta, Wise, McPhie, Hanley, Brunton, Tilley.

Russell Parkes excelled, rescuing what looked like being a disaster into a triumph.  He was 15th in qualifying, the track suddenly becoming quicker half way through leaving last man out Paul di Resta with pole a quarter second faster than Jordan Wise and Gary McPhie.

Ben Hanley, fourth in timed practice, won two heats to Gary McPhie’s one, and Paul di Resta was second twice.  Parkes had a seize in one heat, and was docked a lap for a short cut after being pushed onto the grass in another.  He was last on the grid for the repechage but stormed through to win from Jack Willis, Niall Breen and Daniel Devereaux.

Ben Hanley took an easy lights to flag win in the first (dry) final. Paul di Resta challenged for the lead in the early stages but fell behind Russell Love. Parkes had a stirring drive from the back for seventh.

A drying track for the second final saw everyone but Carl Bradley on wets. Again Hanley pulled out an enormous lead over first Love, then di Resta, Kirkpatrick and finally Parkes as their wets went off to varying degrees on the drying track. With Parkes closing in fast, Hanley slid wide and Parkes seized his chance to take an amazing win. Gary McPhie and Nicky Mitchell fared well in the closing stages, displacing Love, Kirkpatrick and  Gonzalez. With the track drying fast, Bradley on slicks scythed through the field from the back to 8th – another couple of laps and he might well have won.

Final 1: Hanley, Love, di Resta, Wise, Gonzalez, Kirkpatrick.

Final 2: Parkes, Hanley, McPhie, Mitchell, Love Kirkpatrick.

ABkC Formula Cadet

Heat wins: Martin-Dye, Rosenzweig, Sims, A. Christodoulou. B Final: Storey.

Freddie Martin-Dye carved through his heats for the Cadet pole, but after a thrilling battle with Alexander Sims, the latter took the lead and defended vigorously to the flag. Jeremy Metcalfe and Adam C. scrapped for third, Metcalfe just taking the advantage.

Sims, Martin-Dye, Metcalfe, A. Christodoulou, Lancaster, Dolby.

ABkC TKM Junior Intermediate

Heat wins: Parsons, Glover, Higham. B Final: Gibson.

Micky Higham became the ‘rain master’ when in a wet heat on slicks he went from last to first in two laps, ending up lapping virtually everyone in the race.

In the final Stephen Lane took the lead from Luke Johnson in the early stages, but despite a good lead he could not hold off the advances of Ian Parsons, starting 10th on the grid who flew through the field to take a fine win. Lane held second with Martin Ellingham snatching third from Johnson.

Result: Parsons Lane, Ellingham, Johnson, Roe, Cobbing.

ABkC Formula Junior TKM

Heat wins: Hill, McDonald (3), Wilson, Pittingale.B Final: Robb

Daryl McDonald was dominant throughout but spun away his lead on a suddenly wet track, leaving Steven Barden and Paul Wilson to slither to the flag ahead of Onslow-Cole.  Martin Smith’s exclusion from 5th promoted Oakes and Cruttenden.

Result: Barden, Wilson, Onslow-Cole, Robertson, Oakes, Cruttenden.

Formula Junior Yamaha

Heat Wins: Turvey, Walker-Hansell,  Allin.

James Bean chose wet tyres on a dry track and romped away from the battling Oliver Turvey and Martin Plowman on slicks.  Simon Walker-Hansell had been following Allin and Anderson until his fuel pipe rubbed through.

Result: Bean, Turvey, Plowman, Allin, Anderson, Ross.

Clay Pit Bits…

Yet another driver, in this case Martin Smith, was excluded from the meeting for forgetting to put down his chassis number. Competitors are reminded to check and double-check that their scrutineering card is completed in full and correctly… Another exclusion from the meeting was Nikki Wilcox, for giving verbal abuse to officials.  The Stewards gave out the penalty.

Chris Dent escaped with bruises after a check up at hospital when he was hit by another kart when trying to restart his own. James Taylor broke his collar bone after rolling in testing. Get well soon.
