Welcome to the first of this year’s regular newsletters for the Total-Hill House Hammond S1 Junior Series.

And what a way to start the year!  The appalling conditions at Clay Pigeon left little choice but to  sadly abandon the meeting because of track flooding.

The decision was made by the MSA Steward and club stewards with only half the heats being run after torrential non-stop rain brought flooding to several high speed parts of the track.

This is the first time in 20 years of S1 history that a meeting has had to be abandoned.  Championship spokesman Grahame Butterworth said: ”It is a very sad situation after all the work that has gone into the event from competitors and officials. But when you walk around the circuit and see the pools of water you appreciate that it was the correct course of action.” The situation means that the British Junior MSA Championship JICA drivers will now count their best 10 scores out of 12 finals, with the rest their best four scores out of the remaining five rounds.

Regrettably competitors are reminded that slick tyres cannot be re-used at the next round, though fuel may be used. Let’s look forward to some rather better weather in the future…

TOTAL replaces sister company Elf as title sponsor alongside the Hill House Hammond insurance group. Meanwhile Tal-Ko/TKM continues its long running support for S1 as does control fuel supplier Atol and a host of other smaller sponsors including tyre companies. Thanks to them all.

New year, new format.Timed qualifying for the Junior MSA British Championship class, moved to late Saturday afternoon and the new quick yet economical Rotax Junior UK category joins the series for the first time. There was enough action to give an indication towards the new season’s hot shots, but remember the results do not count at all.

Di Resta was in a class of his own in the first heat, ten seconds ahead of Gonzalez, who was being pressed by Keen, Oliver Oakes and Ian Johnstone.

In the second heat Alexander Sims sneaked past Gonzalez at the hairpin on the last lap, with David Gregory tight behind.  Gonzalez went wide dropping to fifth behind Jack Willis and Oakes.

Jordan Oakes with two heat wins was looking good for a final grid pole, ahead of Jake Rosenzweig’s win and second. Nigel Moore was the other heat winner.

Junior TKM was as open and tight as always, with four different heat winners from four races.

With only time for one heat, Nicky Mitchell showed his experience.  Jason Parrott lost second after coming together with a back marker.  Adam Wright came from the back to second, but spun. Heat 1: Nicky Mitchell, Thomas Ward, Darren Burke.

Fifteen JICA drivers were given formal reprimands after red flags during the second heat.  Clerk of the Course Rod Taylor explained: “They went past three red flags at racing speed.”  They were all given two points on their licence under the new points system being trialled in the series.  Twelve points leads to an automatic ban.  Rod Taylor added: “If something positive can come out of these penalties, other drivers will maybe realise the dangers.”

Sam Bird and Chris Chubb were taken to hospital, Bird amazingly released with just bruising, whilst Chubb had a nasty gash on his leg. Hope you’re both OK.
